Between
Cripple Creek's famous fires in April of 1896 and the following
November, Madam Pearl DeVere built this palatial parlor house.
As the fanciest of bordellos, the Old Homestead included running
water, electricity and even a telephone, as well as full-service
staff of chambermaids, housekeepers, a cook and a musician.
Pearl DeVere died of
an accidental morphine overdose in 1897. After serving as a
brothel for several more years, the Homestead was eventually
purchased as a private home before it was made into a museum.
The Old Homestead Parlor House Museum opened for business June
21, 1958. Mr. Raymond W. Bailey of Florence, CO is registered as
the first visitor. Today, the Homestead is owned by the
Wild Horse Casino
and is under the stewardship of the Cripple Creek District
Museum.
